Profile

The Institute for Innovation in Biotechnology, in association with The School of Biological Sciences, offers biotech companies rare access to world-recognised expertise by bringing industry and academic research together in a new purpose-built facility at The University of Auckland. And, because you only lease access to resources as you need them, your precious capital can go into research rather than bricks and mortar.

Ranked among the world's best universities, The University of Auckland is home to four Centres for Research Excellence. Its researchers have brought over a dozen drugs to clinical trial and have been involved in multiple partnerships with global pharma leaders. The University has also spun out several notable multimillion dollar biotech companies including Protemix Corp, Proacta Inc, Neuren Pharmaceuticals, CoDa Therapeutics, Symansis and Pathway Therapeutics.

With 180 staff and 120 PhD students, The School of Biological Sciences (SBS) is also a leader in the biotechnology sector. It is home to several internationally recognised research centres, including the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery, the Centre for Genomics and Proteomics and the Bioinformatics Institute. The SBS has annual research revenues of around $15 milliion, publishes over 150 papers a year in international journals, and regularly sees its research result in new patents.

The IIB serves the full life sciences spectrum, including health, food and environmental biotech. Its research facility is currently being expanded to over 10,000m2 and provides ready-to-use laboratories and high-tech equipment facilities on flexible and competitive terms. All intellectual property is safeguarded through dedicated space, secure IT and offices. Any research undertaken with University researchers can be fully protected through agreements with the University's commercialisation company, Auckland UniServices Limited.

The IIB is significantly supported by the New Zealand Government. It exists to help great biotech companies grow. We would be delighted to meet and show how we can also help fast-forward your R&D.
